Supporting Animals Displaced by the Fires
Additionally, let's not forget our non-human friends during this challenging time. Animal shelters are already above capacity, and the wildfires are increasing the number of pets entering the shelter system. This situation will lead to higher euthanasia rates, so if you have the space in your heart and home to adopt or foster, please consider doing so. Two shelter in dire need are:
LA county animal shelters needs foster homes ASAP! Email the shelter coordinator at Volunteer@animalcare.lacounty.gov
Pasadena Humane has taken in over 300 animals in less than 24 hours, most with burn injuries. They need foster homes ASAP! Email foster@pasadenahumane.org
Canine Rescue Club needs short term fosters for those displaced by the fires. You can fill out a foster application here.
You can also make a donation, which is 100% tax deductible. A few of my favorite local rescues are:
Insurance
Insurance Commissioner Lara is planning an in-person town hall in the near future where you can have all of your questions answered. The details are still being put together, so please stay tuned for further information to come. If you have experienced a loss of property, reach out to your homeowner's insurance agent directly to begin the claim process.
Mortgage Lender
If you're home is uninhabitable or you cannot work due to the wildfires, reach out to your mortgage lender to see if you can get forbearance assistance. Assistance options may include postponement of monthly payments, repayment plans, or loan modifications. Forbearance assistance typically lasts three to six months, but can be extended.
State and Federal Declarations of Emergency
Governor Newsom and President Biden have both declared states of emergency for these fires. This provides additional financial and logistical resources for the ongoing effort by local governments and tribal agencies, and also unlocks individual grant assistance that impacted residents and businesses will be able to apply for. If you have been affected by these wildfires, you can apply for federal assistance at www.disasterassitance.gov, or call the application phone number at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362).
